Culture Athletics
Culture and Athleticism: The two keystones in the journey towards maximizing health and performance.
About
Keith DeNinno
Although my degree is in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Penn State in 2010, my background comes with a wealth of experience and education in the health and fitness industry. While in school, I realized how much I wanted to help others achieve the same success I had in my personal fitness journey and athletics. So I took a deep dive into learning everything I needed to know about exercise science and physical development.
My goal is to help everyone I work with achieve their optimal state of physical potential. My philosophy revolves around two states of being:
1 - Personal Culture: Your individual ethos, how you think and behave. This directs every decision you make and the behavior you display. Without a clear culture, achieving optimal health and fitness will be extremely challenging.
2 - Athleticism: We are physical beings who have to navigate a physical world. Athleticism isn’t reserved for sports. It’s demanded by life. Achieving ultimate athleticism means you achieve the highest level of being human and can handle the physical tasks of daily life

What is Culture Athletics?
Culture is embedded in everything we do. There is a culture in our home life, in our workplace, on our sports team, and in our schools. It encompasses our communities and our nations. It gives us guidance and a sense of direction. Culture is a particular set of customs, morals, codes, and traditions that connect us to how we live. And because of that, it should be a part of our training programs.
I think having a physical fitness culture is what’s missing in most everyone’s journey towards living a healthier and more functional life. Without a sound training culture, it’s almost impossible to bridge the gap between the life you’re living now and the one you dream about. Developing a training culture is what will create the foundation you need to change your life and live healthier.
On the other hand, we have athleticism. I’ve gone out on a limb over the past several years defining this word more distinctly. It used to be a nebulous term that could be thrown around and used however you wanted. Nothing used like that has any real meaning. Athleticism is the set of human traits we possess to move about our environment optimally.
These traits, better described as skills, are all perishable. If we don’t consistently use them, they regress their abilities. In my opinion, this is a dangerous path to allow us to go down. The lives we live today afford us the luxury and comfort we desire, but at the cost of being less active, reducing our overall athleticism.
The very bedrock on which my philosophy of training rests is a short phrase that I found myself naturally saying; Life Demands Athleticism. Nothing explains this more simply but comprehensively than this statement. The more prepared you are for life’s demands, including all the unexpected and unknowns, the more capable and healthy you become.
